Repair Tips for Snark Sailboats
and
How to Make Your Own Parts

HULL REPAIRS
: use two part epoxy cement for all repairs or reattaching rub rail. Obtain locally   May use epoxy cement or automotive epoxy fillers.  For large areas you may use fiberglass repair kits.  All above locally available.  

DO NOT USE ANY PRODUCT CONTAINING PETROLEUM BASES.    

DO NOT USE FIBERGLASS KITS WITH POLYESTER RESINS.



If you need to fill a large area of missing or indented Foam -- Obtain some Styrofoam ( a foam cooler will work ) and cut  a piece to fit.  Glue in using 2 part Epoxy Cement.  For fill areas -- Chop up some Styrofoam and mix with 2 part Epoxy Cement and pack into the void. Sand to finish.

LOOSE PARTS

For loose dagger boards , wrap a layer of waterproof tape (electrical) around top portion to make a snug fit. 

For loose hardware, fill voids with two part epoxy cement, coat threads with epoxy cement and reattach.

For loose masts, wrap bottom with electrical tape.  You coulu also drill a 1/4" hole through the Mast Sleeve and Mast in the area below the Wooden Mast Seat and insert a 1/4" removable pin or bolt.

If you need to loosen a stuck part, NEVER USE AN OIL BASED PRODUCT. Use liquid dish soap.

Painting ABS - Most enamel paints will adhere to ABS. Use several light coats. Test paint in a small spot first. 

DO NOT GET ANY PAINT ON ANY PART OF EXPOSED FOAM - IT WILL DISSOLVE IT.

Painting Sea Snarks - This all foam boat can be fiber glassed, obtain materials locally.  Any petroleum based paint will dissolve the foam. 

DO NOT USE PETROLEUM BASED PAINTS DIRECTLY ON FOAM   

You could also just lightly sand the foam hull  to restore it to a lighter color.

Sunflower note: Some very old Sunflowers were actually the same as a Super Snark. Check dimensions
TIP--COMPARE THE BOOM AND SPAR LENGTHS AS A QUICK CHECK
Super Snark hull 3'-2" wide, 84" mast, 120" Boom, 120" Spar
Sunflower hull 3'-6" wide, 99" mast, 120" boom, 144" Spar
Sunflower Spar may be one piece or 120" + 24" extension.
If your old Sunflower has Super Snark dimensions,  order all Super Snark parts.

Rudder note: The present design uses a plastic rudder head, wooden rudder, aluminum tiller handle.  The rudder head attaches to a plastic gudgeon, (which is bolted to the transom) using a "L" pin.  If your gudgeon is metal, or the tiller wooden, or the rudder head wooden: You need to order XX-01 to update. New parts do not fit older parts.

 

QUICK REPLACEMENT TIPS
 Lost a part?  Use these tips to get back on the water fast

 

RIP IN SAIL You can use a product called Sail Tape - available from many Marine Supply stores.  You could also go to your local Fabric Store and buy a piece of Nylon Fabric and sew a patch on.  
NEVER Wash an old Sail in the washing Machine
-Due to fabric aging by the Sun on an old sail, it may be damaged by machine washing - Hand wash with a liquid dish soap.

 

MAST CAP for Sunflower or Super Snark :  Go to the hardware store and buy an Eyebolt  long enough to go through the mast ( About 1-1/2" Shank).  Drill a hole at the top of the mast and install eyebolt.  Pass the rope to haul the sail up through the eyebolt.

 

MAST  for Super Snark Mast is 84" x 1-1/8" diameter
You can make a mast, EMT Thin wall conduit obtainable at your local hardware store.
A. use 3/4" EMT electrical conduit (actual Outside diameter of about 1"), comes in 10' length Cut to size
B. Wrap tape around bottom to fit snugly in mast sleeve
C. Install an eyebolt at top of mast for hauling sail rope up

 

MAST  for Sunflower Mast is 99" x 1-1/8" diameter
You can make a mast from  EMT Thin wall conduit obtainable at your local hardware store.
A. use 3/4" EMT electrical conduit (actual Outside diameter of about 1"), comes in 10' length Cut to size
B. Wrap tape around bottom to fit snugly in mast sleeve
C. Install an eyebolt at top of mast for hauling sail rope up

 

BOOM for Super Snark  - Boom is 120" x 3/4"
You can make a Boom from EMT Thin wall conduit obtainable at your local hardware store.
A. use 1/2" EMT electrical conduit (actual Outside diameter of about 5/8"), comes in 10' length - just the right size.
B. If you have the old boom, use it as a pattern to drill hardware holes.
C. If you are missing the boom, lay out the Sail on the new piece and use the openings to determine where to drill holes for hardware.

 

BOOM for  Sunflower - Boom is 120" x 7/8"
You can make a Boom from EMT Thin wall conduit obtainable at your local hardware store.
A. use 1/2" EMT electrical conduit (actual Outside diameter of about 5/8"), comes in 10' length - just the right size.
B. If you have the old boom, use it as a pattern to drill hardware holes.
C. If you are missing the boom, lay out the Sail on the new piece and use  the openings to determine where to drill holes for hardware.

 

SPAR  for Super Snark - Spar is 120" x 3/4"
You can make a Spar from EMT Thin wall conduit obtainable at your local hardware store.
A. use 1/2" EMT electrical conduit (actual Outside diameter of about 5/8"), comes in 10' length - just the right size.
B. If you have the old Spar, use it as a pattern to drill hardware holes.
C. If you are missing the Spar, lay out the Sail on the new piece and use  the openings to determine where to drill holes for hardware.

 

SPAR  for Sunflower - Spar is 148" x 7/8"
You can make a Spar from EMT Thin wall conduit obtainable at your local hardware store.
A.  use 1/2" EMT electrical conduit (actual Outside diameter of about 5/8"), comes in 10' length.
B.  Use a 30" piece of 3/4" EMT electrical conduit  and sleeve it over the 1/2" conduit and bolt it in place to make an extension to give you a total length of 148"
C.  If you have the old Spar, use it as a pattern to drill hardware holes.
D.  If you are missing the Spar, lay out the Sail on the new piece and use  the openings to determine where to drill holes for hardware.

 

L-PIN For Rudder - for Super Snark,  Sunflower and Sea Skimmer
Go to the hardware store and get a long bolt to use in place of the L-Pin 
6" L X 1/4" Diameter with a 1/4" Lock Nut.


DAGGER BOARD - for Super Snark,  Sunflower and Sea Skimmer 
8-1/2" W  X 30" L  X 1/2" thick, 2" W @ top
A.  Use 1/2" plywood, cut to size.
B.  Use polyurethane or varnish and apply several coats to waterproof.



Rudder Blade - for Super Snark,  Sunflower and Sea Skimmer 
7" W X 20" L X 1/2" Thick
A.  Use 1/2" plywood, cut to size.
B.  Use polyurethane or varnish and apply several coats to waterproof.

 

RIGGING LINE
Use 3/16" Nylon Line or Rope - obtain from local hardware store.
